You Don't Have A Cheerleader???

Show me a successful individual and I’ll show you someone who had real positive influences in his or her life
D. Washington
There is consensus about the unbelievably powerful influence of having people in your life who cheer you on. Without their support, you may be too scared to accomplish your dreams.

What People Say

Ralph Waldo Emerson describes it, “Our chief want in life is somebody who will make us do what we can”. Emerson was a successful person so you have to assume he knew what he was talking about. But he passed away a long time ago, in 1882 to be exact, and you can say that things have changed.

However, fast forward to today and Denzel Washington’s quote brings in a new perspective changing the value of a cheerleader for success from a want to a necessity. So how do you go about finding your cheerleader?

Finding Your Cheerleader

There are a few ways to find people who are willing to support you.

In the words of a young 14-year-old, “there are many people who want to help you, all you have to do is ask”. Her experience has always been positive about looking around her and selecting people who can help her best.

Having said that, it is important to select those people depending on your personal needs. For example, she knows to reach out for her mom when needing assistance in creative writing. When reflecting on careers, she does not hesitate to reach out to professionals or role models via email.

While some people flat out ignore her emails and others respond that they are too busy, a generous number are willing to meet with her and answer her questions.

Value of Cheerleaders

So why are cheerleaders, who can also be known as mentors, coaches or accountability partners, so important?
  • Cheerleaders bring a new perspective that you may not consider on your own.
  • They have been through and can share experiences that you may be considering.
  • Cheerleaders brainstorm with you as you select your life or career path.
  • They support you if you are struggling to create or reach your goals.
  • Cheerleaders help you overcome possible setbacks.
  • They celebrate your accomplishments and achievements as their own.

Superb! You Say, How Do I Go About It

Here are a few ways that you can establish a system of supportive others to build your career path:
  • Your parents can be your best mentors.
  • Some teachers look forward to supporting students’ ideas – "all you have to do is ask".
  • Email professionals whose career may be of interest to you.
  • Look up non-profit organizations or local libraries that offer free mentoring.
  • Seek out the help of a career counselor or a professional career coach.

Share Your Experience

Do you already have a person who is there for you when you need help? If not, can you think of other ways to find your cheerleader? Please share your experience.

Final Thoughts

On your way to fulfilling your dreams, having one or more cheerleader makes your journey easier as you realize goals, overcome setbacks and celebrate accomplishments.

Now is the time to start selecting the ideal members for your cheerleaders' club.

What are you waiting for?

As for the future, your task is not to foresee it but to enable it.
Antoine de Saint Exupéry
My clients, new acquaintances as well as many of you, my dear readers of my blog, often ask how did I uncover my career path. Here is a snippet of my career journey along with some tips that I hope will help you find your career path.

I work as a private practitioner. When I decided to embark on a journey as a solo career management professional, I knew that before I put in the extra hours to ensure that my practice takes off, I needed to refine my reasons for starting a business as a solopreneur.

Write Your Own Reasons

An excerpt of my reasons to help you write your own includes the following:
  • My clients are my bosses.
  • I am on a mission to prove to myself that I CAN launch my own practice.
  • I am empowered by my passion to help others.
  • I want my clients to find purpose like I did.
  • I can envision my future (me helping many clients design their career journey) and all I need to do is to enable it.
  • My sense of accomplishment is unmeasurable every time I see the happiness on my clients’ faces.
  • I can facilitate the launch of my practice guided by my clients’ needs.

How Do You Commence Your Career Journey?

Simply put, you need a detailed action plan that starts with reasons similar to the ones stated above. Wait! Do NOT rush into creating the plan yet. This is the final step in the launch of your career journey. You have to do some exploratory work to discover your reasons. This can be an engaging experience if you come with the right mindset. Think of it as a bout of intense reflection.

Bouts Of Intense Reflection

I was not sure what my likes, interests and values were. It can be hard to define them if you have never thought about it. Like me, you can start your intense reflection contrary to what many specialists suggest; the activities you dislike and the skills you are certain you do not want to be using in your future career rather than with your likes and interests. This is very helpful and I suggest you use this unconventional method if you are uncertain about what you need to do to move forward; dissect what you hate to find out what you like.

Really Get To Know YOU

Once you get to know YOU, you are ready to move forward to uncover your skills, abilities and strengths.
  • What is it that you do best?
  • What is an ability that your parents or friends tell you, “you are so good at this” or “you are so talented!”?
  • What are some of your strengths?
  • Would you describe yourself as creative, determined or resilient?
Note your answers somewhere, on a piece of paper, your computer or your phone.

Combine Your Reflection Results

Next step is to combine everything you have learned about yourself to start exploring possible careers.

You are well acquainted with YOU, now it is time to figure what kind of work makes YOU happy.

One of my joys was seeing others succeed whether in school or later on in life. Call me silly, but I cry at graduations and other similar work celebrations. I think of all the focus, failures and hard work that led to these special moments that I am overwhelmed with mixed emotions. Anyway, I realized that my work has to include seeing my clients succeed.

What invokes similar emotions for you? It could be a sales pitch, a competition or even crying at weddings. No emotional experience is too silly to explore!

This is what it takes to enable your future career vision.

Are You Ready?

Once you have collected all this data, you are ready to design your career action plan. Creating the action plan is for another blog post.

For now, how about you get to know what does YOU really like to do?

If you can stand in space just for a little while, a new door will open, or you’ll be able to see in the dark after a while, you’ll adjust
Jane Campion
I host one hour chats every Friday. The topic changes every Friday and one particular is entitled, “Hoda’s Career Chat”. I started these free calls during the COVID-19 lockdown. I found myself always super excited to hear the proposed questions and shared ideas that I decided to keep the it going. Attendees can email any education or career related questions or concerns in advance or in the chat box during the chat.

Questions Answered

Some of the questions during the height of the pandemic were related to stress such as, “How can I manage my stress level when I know I cannot find a job?” It can indeed be very stressful when all the economic, statistical and medical reports are negative.

Today, the questions have changed a bit and relate to adjusting life post pandemic or almost out of pandemic. Yet, questions on how to handle stress during these new normal times have not stopped.

Tips To Handle Stress

It may seem that posted jobs are scarce and the competition is fierce. How is one to remain positive in such an environment?

Do NOT panic!

I have compiled a step by step guide for you. Think of it as your go-to guide whenever stressful thoughts start creeping in:

  • Breathing exercises; take a deep breath in and an equal breath out. Repeat this step three to five times. I am not a breathing expert but everyone who tried this exercise, usually comes back and thanks me for sharing it. It is such a simple exercise, yet its benefits are amazing. If this one does not work for you, there are many other breathing exercises freely available online; check them out to find the one that best works for you.
  • Believe in yourself; your skills, abilities and knowledge. This is where my expertise as a Career Professional comes in. This second step is so important for you to spend some time reflecting on because without this belief, you will find it difficult to leave stressful thoughts behind and move forward to the next step. YOU ARE UNIQUE! Whether you are fourteen or forty, your skills, abilities and knowledge are exclusively yours. These capabilities were developed through your individual experimentation and interpreted from your distinct perspective. Make a list of your skills, abilities and knowledge; brace yourself...you will be astonished by your own capabilities.
  • Be truly self-confident; say it out loud, “I am confident!”. This is another exercise that I recommend my clients use before an interview. It never ceases to amaze me how self-assured my clients feel after yelling “I am confident!” two to three times. This step should be easy for you to do once you start believing in yourself. Some clients have created their own versions such as, “I am amazing!” or “Nothing can bring me down!”.
  • Believe in your ability to go on a journey of self-exploration. So now you know that you are amazingly confident. What happens next? It is time to dig a little deeper and work to build self-awareness. Who are you? What do you enjoy? Why? What are your dreams? What do you need to accomplish them? Where do you want to be? Do not worry about what others think. You are the only judge of your answers. You know who YOU are. Get to know YOU and go beyond the superficial level.
  • Purposefully self-assess to explore what you are good at in your daily life. This next step is time consuming and demanding but it is worth every minute if you remain focused on your goal; managing your stress level. Here again, you will need to ask yourself some very tough questions. Answer them as honestly as you can. What are you good at (Go back to the list you created in 'believe yourself")? What do you do every single day? Do people come to you for advice? Where and when do you lose track of time?
  • Look at every challenge or failure as a learning opportunity. This is the final and most important step. You are ready to face the world and defy the odds. Any challenges or failures are lessons learned. You applied to a hundred positions and no response; ask yourself why. You made it to the interview but did not get the job; follow up with an email to the person who interviewed you. These are examples of challenges that you may encounter during your job search. Turn them into silver bullets by thinking of them as learning experiences rather than dead ends.

Try It! What Do You Have To Lose

Try this step-by-step guide and let me know what you think. Some of you may find it easy to complete it in one sitting. Others may want to take their time reflecting on each step and may take a month or more to reach step six. This is your journey.

Take as much time as you need and remember that your focus should be to destress by envisioning a plan of your job search or career.

Let me know how it goes!
