Is it okay to get a good-paying job while taking on a challenge that inspires me outside of work? Would I still be happy? A Nagging ConcernI received the above question on the knowledge-sharing platform, Quora. It is also a nagging concern I often hear about from students and young clients — especially when we start talking about career paths and best personal next step. As I encourage young people to explore challenges tied to definite causes they care about, they sometimes wonder: Does my job have to do it all? And the truth is — not always. For ExampleOne client comes to mind — a recent graduate who landed a well-paying corporate role in tech. It wasn’t her “dream job,” but it gave her financial stability and space to breathe. At the same time, she launched a small initiative to provide mentorship for girls in STEM — something she deeply cared about but didn’t know how to pursue full time. The result? She felt energized, fulfilled, and proud — not because her job did everything, but because her life felt whole. Not One Perfect OptionSometimes, purpose is not about one perfect job. It's about building a life that includes what matters most to you — in and outside of work. What do you think? Can meaning and money co-exist — even if they come from different places? Your career can be financially stable and still give you the time, energy, and freedom to pursue something meaningful on the side. A passion project. A community initiative. An idea that just won’t leave you alone. Fulfillment Doesn’t Just HappenTrue fulfillment grows from reflection. What does reflection mean? It means pausing to understand who you are and what matters most to you. Understanding yourself is the first step to finding what truly lights you up. It is about inner probing and active inquiring with honesty and curiosity, allowing the rest to begin to fall into place. It really is how the path to the best personal next step becomes clearer. Carry this with you as you decide on your next step: Fulfillment doesn’t always come from a single role — sometimes it’s the combination of what you do for work and what you choose to do beyond it. When you take time to look inward, you begin to build a life and career that truly fit you. Have questions? I am Hoda Kilani CCDP ®, CPCC, certified Career and Academic coach.
